About us
Rabeck Foundation recognises the literacy needs of indigenous Australians and the urgency to provide a real solution with real results. Many indigenous communities, particularly remote or isolated ones, endure educational disadvantages that effect life choices and employment opportunities.
Working with community groups, indigenous leaders, governments and private organisations, the foundation delivers literacy resources, specialised programs and teaching aid to indigenous communities throughout Australia.
Working together, we aim to help students achieve greater levels of literacy, and support teachers wishing to provide a foundation for a more productive educational experience for their students.
Rabeck Foundation uses a variety of teaching methods and programs. The key to our programs is The DD Code English Language Learning System. Developed in Australia over the past 25 years, The DD Code provides a phonetic-based solution to reading, comprehension and pronunciation.
So why is Rabeck Foundation focusing on indigenous literacy and not general education? The 2006 ABS census shows 37% of the Northern Territory’s indigenous population had not gone beyond year 8 level of education. In fact, only 1 in 5 children living in remote communities can read at the accepted minimum standard. The foundation’s core belief is that reading underpins all education. No student can perform well in other subjects like math, science, history and social studies without being able to read. Without quality reading skills, a child’s entire education and life beyond school is deminished.
Rabeck Foundation is starting at the most important part of the education process… reading. Our approach and programs are about reading to learn, rather than learning to read.
